While you want your child to study hard and make good grades, it’s important to ensure that his or her dorm room is not only a great place to study, but a great place to hang out and relax.

Having a dorm room that’s nice to spend time in and not too cluttered will go a long way in making your child comfortable and happy.

Dorm room decorating need not be expensive.  Any modest budget should be adequate for creating a great looking dorm room.

Here are some dorm room decorating ideas to get you started…

Dorm Room Bedding

The bed is usually the focal point and having bedding that is stylish is important.   Many college dorms require certain size sheets for their bed, usually Twin XL.  Be sure that you know what this requirement is before you start shopping for sheets.

If the requirement is Twin XL, the regular Twin sheets will not fit.  You could use Full sized sheets, tucking the excess under the mattress.

It is usually best to pick out a bedding ensemble first, and then decorate the rest of the dorm room around it.

One other important aspect to decorating a dorm room is to have it reflect your child’s personality and style.   It should be a great place to sleep, study, relax, listen to music, and hang out with friends.  One of the best ways to do this is to have some nice wall decor.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Posters are a great way to display  interest and style.  Be sure to keep posters in good taste so as not to offend visitors or a roommate!
  • Keep reminders or memories, family and friends.  Make a mural or collage of pictures.   Another way to display is to get a cork board and attach pictures.  This way pictures can be changed out anytime!  Pictures also make a dorm room feel more like home.
  • Find a fabric that you love and hang over your bed to brighten up the room.  Or you can use a dark colored fabric to put over the window to keep the sunlight out.
