Dorm Room Bedding

Choosing dorm room bedding is not as simple as choosing a color that you like.  The quality of fabric and thread count construction is also important as it will have an impact on the comfort and quality of sleep your child gets.

Sheet Sets

The very best deals on college bedding can be found through online retailers.  I’ve bought a lot of bedding online and have found that the following stores offer a great selection at the best prices:  Overstock, The Home Decorating Company, and More Bedding Sets.

When shopping for bedding sets, it is important to get the correct size in sheets.  Most college dormitories require Twin Extra Long (Twin XL)icon.

Note that many twin bedding sets (or bed in a bag sets) may not include the extra long sheets.  For this reason, I recommend buying comforter sets and sheets separately, unless the bedding set specifies extra long twin fitted sheets.   In most cases, comforters need not be extra long as they are usually long enough to hang over the edge of the bed.

These sheets shown on the left by Colorations are available in Twin XL and in nearly every color in the spectrum! These Solid & Stripe Sheet Sets are 200 thread count, 100% cotton and include the flat sheet, fitted sheet, and 1 pillow case.  Extra pillow cases are available separately.

Good quality sleep is critical for college students’ academic, social, and physical/athletic performance. So, even if the bedding will get worn a little faster with commercial grade washers and dryers, even if it may have to withstand a bit more wear and tear, spills and stains; having good quality bedding that is durable and comfortable is important when selecting college dorm bedding.

Another great set of Twin XL sheet sets are these Camden Collection Sheet Sets(shown on right). These sheets are constructed of 350 thread count, 100% Egyptian cotton.

You may want to consider wrinkle free sheets for your child’s college bedding.  These sheets are easy to care for and long lasting.

We recommend these 400 Thread Count Wrinkle-Free Sateen Bedding. These sheets are a bit more expensive, but they are very durable and, wrinkle free, means they are easy to care for and will look great the entire year!

This Horizon Sheet Set (below) will add graphic interest to any dorm room.  These 300 thread count 100% cotton sheets are available in extra long twin sizes.  They feature a tone-on-tone print reminiscent of a setting sun and are perfect the college student that wants bedding with a little more color.

Bedding Sets

Many students and parents alike will go to the nearest Target, Kmart, or Wal-Mart and get the cheapest bed in a bag set that they can find.  More often then not, the bedding is not good quality and will start to wear out after just a few washings.  If you are buying your college bedding in a small college town, then the best bedding will usually be picked over and the least attractive colors and designs remain available.

Attractive comforter sets can easily be found online in Twin sizes.  The best deals, as well as selection, are best found through the many online retailers.   However, even when purchasing online, it’s best to shop for college bedding as early as possible before the school session begins because the XL Twin sizes do tend to sell out early.

Below are just a few of stylish and affordable bedding sets to consider.

Mattress Topper

Another important bedding item for dorm rooms is a good mattress topper (not a mattress protector) that will give added comfort. Most mattresses in college dorms are not the most comfortable, so a good mattress topper is a good idea. Overstock has a great selection of mattress toppers.

There are just a few final things I would like to mention about picking out Dorm Room Bedding.   Be sure to check the care instructions.  Make sure that it is machine washable.  Dry cleaning is expensive and a major inconvenience for a college student.

Try not to get bedding that is too bulky.   If it is too bulky, it may not fit into the washers and dryers in the dormitory laundry room.

While I think  bedding is the most important dorm room necessity, there are other dorm room necessities.  Check out our suggestions for college dorm room décor and accessories.

Be sure to get your college bedding well before the start of college as the selection of twin XL bedding can be difficult to find.
