Going to college is an exciting experience for any college student. There is a sense of independence, and along with that come many new friends and experiences that will become part of the college life!

Part of that college life for many students is dormitory living. While there there are exceptions, most dorm rooms are small, dingy, and often outdated. The best way to update a dorm room is to create a space that will reflect one’s style and be comfortable at the same time.

Since the bed is the primary piece of furniture in a dorm room it is also the focal point. Great college bedding can change the look and feel of your dorm room. This and just a few important dorm room accessories can create a great home away from home!

Here are a few helpful tips for selecting college bedding:

  • Get extra long sheets.  Most on-campus housing requires Twin XL or Twin XXL bedding. That means that regular twin-sized sheets will not fit. The differences in bedsize between a Twin, a Twin XL and a Twin XXL are: Twin 39″ X 75″, Twin XL 39″ X 80″, and Twin XXL 39″ X 84″.    Check with your college for these requirements.
  • Get sheets that reflect your own personal style.  College bedding need not be plain white sheets.   Keep in mind that there is not a lot of room in dorm rooms for other furniture such as chairs or couches.  This means that the bed may often be used as a sitting area for studying, hanging out with friends, and snacking.  For this reason, darker sheets are recommended because they will not show stains as much.
  • Get several sets of sheets.  College life can be busy and usually, doing laundry, is not a top priority.  We recommend 3 sets of sheets: one on the bed, one in the laundry basket, and one clean set ready for the next change.
  • Get sheets that have a higher thread count.  These sheets are softer and will also withstand the commercial washers and dryers that are in the laundry rooms, both on campus and off campus.
  • Get good mattress pad.  The mattresses will not be very high quality and a thick mattress pad will make a huge difference on the quality of sleep!    Memory foam is great but can also be pricey.   There are also less expensive foams that can easily be found at an affordable price.
